Yellow Brick Road In Recovery
My recovery and working toward staying sober has been a treacherous journey. It has been like driving on a winding road in a mountain. I managed to fall off the cliff as a result of facing new challenges along the way.
My recent challenge has been dealing with another member’s untreated persona;lity disorder. That Is “Malignant Narcissistic Personality Disorder”
For more than two years now, I have been dealing with stalking in addition to my addiction. His daily covert activity, which is hidden from everyone, has taken a toll on me.
He is constantly breaking the tradition, for example:
using one tradition against the others to manipulate people.
Taking traditions out of context
interpreting them the way they were not meant to be,
are the ways hen broke traditions.
Traditions are very sacred and they are there to maintain safety for people. Something, that I have not experienced for last two years.
In essence, the program’s traditions were the biggest victim. In particular and noteworthy is the tradition of anonymity.
I was also facing another challenge. That is the blindness that exists in the recovery circle. They were blinded to my pain.
They look the other way, because people can not deal with the rocking boats.
Worse than that, some started protecting a behavior that is predatory. I wouldn’t be surprised, if it is revealed, that is how it was, when they were growing up.
We bring all the family secrets to the room and pretend the rooms are nothing like the family we grew up in. We will continue to behave the way we were.
I like to call this behavior “histrionically Challenged”. That is when the blindness is the result of the theatrics that the Narcissist(NPD) performs.
Why “Yellow Brick Road in Recovery” . This work has two objectives. First, talking about broken traditions that exist in many meetings. In particular the tradition of anonymity. Second, it is to bring out to the spotlight the taboo topic of predators in the room.
I have created an adaptation of part of “The Wizard Of Oz” . I felt that was great way tp convey the story . It has three main archetypes;
“The Wicked Witches of the West” represents the predatory behavior of a Narcissist(NPD). Constantly breaking boundaries of traditions to achieve his goals.
“Dorothy” represents innocence and most importantly rules of the traditions.
“Flying Monkeys' ' represent blindness in the fellowship. In particular the blindness of what traditions were meant to be.
