Introduction

I really wanted to call this section "how to breakup friendships". But, i didn't. The reason for it was there is a history behind the word Gaslighting , which means:

manipulate (someone) by psychological means into questioning their own sanity.

The term has a history of roughly about 80 years, Which I will get to it shortly. The intension of this essay is to tell my story and show how gaslighting has become so sophisticated using modern technology.

History

It has been over 75 years since the production of extraordinary movie Gaslight. It was nominated for 5 Oscars and won 2. One was for great performance by Ingrid Bergman.

The movie had significant impact on awareness about narcissistic abuse. In fact, the term “Gaslighting” to mean manipulating (someone) by psychological means into questioning their own sanity is derived from the plot of the movie.

It is strongly suggested to see the movie to understand the plot, since it is beyond the scope of this writing to go through the entire movie.

My experience

It is strongly suggest to view YouTube video under “How to break up friendship” heading in the reference section below . It shows how easy it is to send a text message to someone pretending to be someone else .

In here I have listed several incidents that was orchestrated by the narcissist. It is intended to created chaos and incite conflicts among friends.

Incident 1

In this incident there were few exchanges of messages between a friend and I. It was about arranging the delivery of a painting to her. This set of texts messages was interjected by the narcissist ‘ s derogatory message disguises as my friend

Here is the sequence

1. Making arrangement to send the painting

2. The narcissist spoofs a derogatory coded message pretending to be my friend B. This is also called spear phishing. (The coded messaging will be address in another project)

3. The confusion as the result of the narcissist 's spoofing.

3. My friend B. receives the painting .

Incident 2

In this incident the narcissist spoofs a sexual harassment coded message pretending to be my friend B.

Other Incidents

There were several other messages with other friends Specially BR. L. and A. For the case of BR., The narcissist spoofs several jokes as coded message. Sadly . I did not save the messages.

The sequence was like below and was repeated several times,

1. narcissist sent a joke pretending to be "BR".

2. I sent a respond being please with the joke.

3. "BR" was surprised from my respond.

This is called Gaslighting. Creating a situation to question and doubt the sanity. It is also called Stroop effect , which I will get to another time.
